Business Compiled by Mark E Neumann DaVita FMCNA sign EPO deals with Amgen As competition looms on the horizon Amgen Inc has finalized new long term supply contracts with DaVita Inc and Fresenius Medical Care North America for its anemia product Epogen The Thousand Oaks biotechnology company said in a regulatory filing that it had signed a seven year contract to provide DaVita with at least 90 of its anemia drug needs Amgen also entered into a multiyear agreement starting this month to supply Epogen on a nonexclusive basis to FMCNA the company said Amgen has effectively locked in two thirds of its Epogen customer base with these DaVita and Fresenius contracts Stifel Nicolaus analyst Maged Shenouda told the Los Angeles Times in a Nov 18 article Epogen sales totaled 252 billion in 2010 but Amgen is facing competition from Affymax which has already received two U S Food and Drug Administration advisory committee approvals for its anemia drug peginesatide The FDA has set a March 27 target date for final review U S Renal opens three N Y clinics U S Renal Care Inc has opened new clinics in Tonawanda Cheektowaga and Williamsville in the Buffalo NY area over the last three months Each center has 13 stations Combined the clinics are expected to create 45 new local jobs The centers were the subject of Certificates of Need granted by the New York Public Health and Health Planning Council and are the companys first dialysis centers in the state The new facilities are expected to draw patients from a 30 mile radius around each center 3rd Quarter Earnings Home dialysis companies show strong growth NxStage Medical Inc reported revenue for the third quarter of 2011 increased 24 to 559 million compared to 45 million for the third quarter of 2010 Home revenue grew 22 to 272 million compared to 223 million for the third quarter of 2010 Critical care revenue grew 35 to 92 million compared to 68 million in 2010 Revenue for in center increased 23 to 195 million compared to 159 million in 2010 The company reported a net loss of 53 million or 010 per share for the third quarter of 2011 compared with a net loss of 82 million or 017 per share in 2010 Baxter International Inc reported third quarter net income of 576 million an increase of 10 from 525 million in the third quarter of 2010 Earnings per diluted share of 101 grew 13 from 089 per diluted share reported last year Baxters third quarter financial results included an after tax special charge of 48 million or 008 per diluted share for the resolution of long standing litigation Worldwide sales totaled 348 billion compared to sales of 322 billion in the third quarter of 2010 an increase of 8 Sales within the United States of 140 billion grew 1 International sales of 208 billion advanced 13 Acquisitons DeNovo ASA acquires Renal CarePartners Ambulatory Services of America Inc and its subsidiary Innovative Dialysis Systems have acquired Hollywood Fla based provider Renal CarePartners Inc RCP currently owns interests in and manages 17 dialysis centers in eight states and the territory of Puerto Rico providing care to approximately 1100 patients It also operates two staff assisted home hemodialysis programs and an acute dialysis program providing services to nine hospitals Ambulatory Services of America headquartered in Brentwood Tenn is a diversified health care services company that provides alternative site services in partnership with physicians After the acquisition ASA through Innovative Dialysis will own interests in and provide management services to 62 dialysis programs in 13 states and the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico serving more than 5700 patients Business Briefs Leadership DaVita Labs announced the appointment of Leslie Mirani as DaVita Labs new vice president and general manager Miranis previous roles included working for Human Genome Sciences as an immunology sales director and as vice president for Amgens nephrology business unit for 18 years She is a registered clinical dietitian Northwest Kidney Centers has named Bob Lemon and Richard D Greaves to its board of trustees Lemon worked for 31 years with Accenture LLP including 21 years as a partner before retiring in 2003 Greaves spent 35 years working for Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP in Seattle He served as Seattle Office Managing Partner from 1996 1998 and partner in the firms audit practice from 1986 to 2005 before transferring to the firms advisory practice Nephrology News Issues January 2012 Subscribe to our free eNewsletter at www NephrologyNews com 14
