Redsense's safety device is designed to detect venous nee-dle dislodgement during hemodialysis. The current meth-od of detecting needle dislodgement is venous pressure monitoring, a built-in function of all dialysis machines. DSI Renal names Kaplan new CMODSI Renal made Mark Kaplan, MD, its new executive vice president and chief medical officer June 2. Kaplan practices nephrology in Nashville, Tenn. and he has been involved in nephrology research on a national scale as vice president of clinical research for Fresenius Medical Care. Baxter names new president of renal business Baxter International Inc. announced June 2 that Robert M. Davis is its new corporate vice president and president of the company's renal division, filling a role vacated by Bruce H. McGillivray, who retired after 30 years of service to the company. Davis previously served as corporate vice president and chief financial officer for Baxter. FDA fines Genzyme $175M for manufacturing problems Genzyme Corp. will pay a $175 million penalty to federal regulators in connection with long-standing manufac-turing problems that have already cost the company millions. The payment, which Genzyme disclosed last month when it reported its first-quarter performance, is the return of "unlawful profits" from the sale of products made at the plant, the FDA said. US Renal Care completes buyout of Dialysis Corp. US Renal Care Inc. officially completed its acquisition of Dialysis Corporation of America, Inc. for $110.25 million. US Renal Care now operates dialysis services for 5,500 patients across 84 dialysis centers in nine states. Fenton nominated for election to Genzyme's board Genzyme Corporation announced that the nominat -ing and corporate governance committee of its board of directors has nominated Dennis M. Fenton, PhD, for elec-tion to the board. Fenton was executive vice president of operations at Amgen when he retired from the company in 2008.Abbott Laboratories acquired Indian pharmaceutical busi-ness Piramal Group May 21 for $3.7 billion. Piramal sells more than 350 antibiotics, heart drugs, painkillers, and other drugs across India. Abbott already has operations in India, with more than 2,500 employees.
