NN&I - May 2010
54 Nephrology News & Issues May 2010www.nephronline.comResearch academic may be more driven towards the development and testing of theory, while the clinician has more imme-diate needs: determining what works and with whom. From a more practical standpoint, the academic may view the research as a means to an end, whereas the clinician may view the work as an end in itself. Maybe the old joke about the differ -ence between an academic and clini -cian says it best: "The clinician learns less and less about more and more until he knows nothing about every-thing, and the academic learns more and more about less and less until he knows everything about nothing." Surely, there is some middle ground upon which they both could operate and thrive? References1. Blumenthal D. Conflict of interest in biomedical research. Health Matrix: Journal of Law Medicine.
