In 1999 a new funding model was adopted by the MRP that included clini-cal pharmacy services at a fixed ratio of pharmacists to patients (see Table 1). The funding ratio was based upon a literature review; a jurisdictional scan of renal pharmacy services available in Manitoba and Canada; a needs assess-ment for MRP pharmacists, nurses, and physicians; and finally, based on achieving consensus among stakehold-ers about the ideal clinical pharmacist funding ratio. First, literature establish-ing the role of the renal clinical pharma-cist was summarized, which included an evaluation of existing funding for clinical pharmacy services at dialysis units across Canada. Second, data about existing and projected MRP patient demographics was collated in order to project need. Third, pharmacists, nurses, and physicians within the MRP were surveyed about existing clinical pharmacist workload and services, as well as clinical pharmacist prac-tice expectations agreed upon by MRP nephrologists and pharmacists. Fourth, a gap analysis between actual, desired, and projected need for clinical phar-macy services was conducted. Finally, a consensus was achieved through pre-sentation of this project to the MRP executive (physicians, administrators, managers of patient care). This fund-ing is now included in all expansions of the MRP.As of 2009, 10.0 full-time clinical pharmacists are employed within the MRP. On average, the MRP pharmacists spend 75% (range 15% to 100%) of their time on activities related to patient care within the MRP with the remain-der of their time performing drug dis-tribution in the hospital pharmacy.
